History
The theatre life in Kotka began in 1908 when The Kotka Labour Theatre was founded. The National Society Stage was founded three years later and changed its name to The Kotka Stage – The Provincial Theatre of Kymenlaakso in 1934. These two theatres merged in 1940 and formed The Kotka Provincial Theatre. Since 1948 the theatre has been located at the address Keskuskatu 15, in a building, which originally was built for the Civil Guard in 1927. The Kotka City Theatre Ltd. was founded in 1951. The City of Kotka owns all its shares. The theatre building was refurbished and extended in 2004 – 2005 and it contains now also the neighbouring premices of an old cinema theatre, which became the Neighbour Stage. Since 1986 The Kotka City Theatre is also putting up plays in old seaman restaurant called Kairo.
